I have used Affinity Designer for 4+ years to create all of the images you see on this blog, as well as my other sites. But running a small business and having to pay for everything myself, was just too expensive. The Creative Cloud costs $50+/month, and if I were to get Illustrator by itself, it would cost me $20+/month. Affinity Designer is by far the best Adobe Illustrator alternative I’ve ever found. The best part about Affinity Designer is that it only costs $49.99. And it’s not a subscription, this is simply a one-time purchase, and you get all the updates forever. It’s available from the developer’s website and the Mac App Store. Tip: For saving images for the web, the best color profile for Mac is sRGB IEC61966-2.1. In Affinity Designer, you can find this under the “More” button when you go to export an image. I also have a few Affinity Designer tutorials I’m working on. I recently published one on how to easily cut a shape out of another shape. The Alfred Mac app is all about productivity! If you’ve ever heard of a tool called TextExpander, this is that on steroids. You can use it to speed up all sorts of tasks that you do regularly on the Mac. One example, I use a lot of emojis when I’m writing and sharing on social media. I have hotkeys (or snippets as Alfred calls them) so that I can easily insert emojis as I write. ![]() For example, I can type  and it will automatically convert into ?. ![]()

For starters, you need to figure out what set your migraine in motion. Thus, migraine treatments and therapies are often the best way to deal with kaleidoscope vision. Kaleidoscope vision is not an illness or condition but, rather, a symptom of an underlying problem that must be treated. SEE RELATED: Is eye twitching a sign of stroke? How is kaleidoscope vision treated? Migraines also have a relationship with multiple sclerosis (MS), though scientists have not determined whether migraines can predict someone may develop MS. Often, TIAs mean a real stroke - which can cause paralysis or even death - is about to happen. They usually occur for a minute or two and then seem to go away. TIAs are the result of blockages in the blood vessels of the brain. This is an important distinction because if you’ve never had migraines and they don’t run in your family, then kaleidoscope vision could be a warning sign you cannot afford to ignore.įor instance, a transient ischemic attack (TIA), also known as a mini-stroke, may cause kaleidoscope vision. If your mom, dad or siblings get them, you may, too. What else can kaleidoscope vision be a sign of? Scotomas are among the most common visual symptoms of migraines. Kaleidoscope vision is related to a scotoma, a blind spot in the field of vision. The symptoms of ocular migraines, including kaleidoscope vision, usually fade within an hour. While most migraines strike the brain, an ocular migraine results from reduced blood flow in the retina and therefore occurs in the eyes. Kaleidoscope vision often occurs during these auras. Migraine auras are considered benign because they don’t inflict pain. A migraine aura is a collection of symptoms that happen before a migraine strikes. One result of this pressure is kaleidoscope vision, which usually occurs in the two primary varieties of migraine: Migraines are throbbing headaches that can last up to three days, usually because of changes in brain chemistry that affect blood flow.įactors like stress and changing body hormones can trigger a migraine, which generates pressure throughout the brain, including the visual centers. This is where the connection with migraines comes in. Changes in flow of blood through the vision system can influence the retina’s ability to capture light waves and the brain’s ability to transform light waves into eyesight. When this system works properly, the cornea and lens bend light and project it onto the retina, whose light-sensitive nerves translate light waves into visual information that travels over the optic nerve to the brain’s vision-processing centers.īlood vessels carry nutrients and oxygen to the eyes and the brain. But what’s actually going on? The explanation starts in the structures of the human vision system, which consists of the eyeball ( cornea, lens and retina), optic nerve and vision centers in the brain. ![]() Kaleidoscope vision may happen in one or both eyes. The shimmering, prismatic effect of these childhood toys inspires the term “kaleidoscope vision.” It doesn’t look exactly like peering into a kaleidoscope, but it does create a sensation of tints, shapes and sparkles - often in motion - that are visually similar. Remember the kaleidoscopes you played with as a child? Most kids loved playing with these little hand-held telescopes - gazing through the eyepiece in the narrow end, rotating the wide end by hand and witnessing a dynamic world of vibrant wonders within. When your vision changes suddenly, it’s definitely time to pay attention and, in some cases, seek medical attention. But it can also be a sign of other issues, some of them serious. Most of the time, kaleidoscope vision is just a warning sign that a migraine is coming on. It’s only natural to wonder if something’s gone haywire with your eyesight. These visual quirks may sound magical but can actually be alarming, especially if you’re trying to read or drive to work. Kaleidoscope vision occurs at the edge of your field of view: Bright lights sparkle vivid colors swirl. ![]() ![]() ObjectiveLimit and the iterate is feasible, then the If the objective function value goes below Least ObjectiveImprovementThreshold lower: (fold – fnew)/(1 + |fold|) > Solution only when it locates another with an objective function value that is at 'mininfeas' - Explore the node with the minimal 'minobj' - Explore the node with the minimum Maximum amount of time in seconds allowed for the ![]() Strictly positive integer that is the maximum number of nodes the solverĮxplores in its branch-and-bound process. Points of interest, which refers to most buildings and landmarks in 7 Days to Die, will also see some changes. Shadows on grass, which were previously removed from the game in order to improve performance, will return in the update for players with higher-end PCs. However, the developers still ensure that all players on a server can have some fully-simulated zombies on screen at the same time. Certain features will be throttled at a distance from the player in order to decrease PC workloads both client-side and server-side. There are also a number of changes coming to the Alpha 21 update for 7 Days to Die that seem geared toward improving the game's performance. To match this, repair kits will no longer simply return vehicles to full health, but the vehicles themselves will also do more damage and have improved collision physics. Grease Monkey now increases the effectiveness of repair kits the higher the player's skill, the more vehicle health the kit will restore. In previous versions of 7 Days to Die, Grease Monkey governed what vehicles players could craft, but with crafting reliant on skills rather than perks in the upgrade, that'll change. The Grease Monkey perk will receive special attention in the Alpha 21 update, while the Sexual T-Rex perk will be removed. Although perks will no longer grant knowledge of crafting recipes, taking on perks for a particular weapon type will increase the probability of finding relevant magazines and parts. Players can only craft items of higher tech levels if they have the appropriate skill level, effectively requiring players to progress in order to craft higher-quality items. Skills will be increased by reading magazines that can be found, bought from traders, or rewarded for quest completion. Starting with the update, skills, not perks, will dictate what crafting recipes players can use, and the quality of the items they'll make. Perhaps the most extensive updates coming in 7 Days to Die's Alpha 21 update will focus on the skill, perk, and crafting systems. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Playful but heartfelt, a send-up of Hollywood tropes and Asian stereotypes, Interior Chinatown is Charles Yu's most moving, daring, and masterly novel yet. to the author Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah for a recent By the Book interview. Usually though, beetle population densities are not as high as in some other pest insects, and they typically prefer food trees which are already sick or dying from some other cause. Some species can become major pests, e.g., in tree plantations. Rhinoceros beetles could play a big part in the next generation of aircraft design. MinJun Kim, leading a team of engineers in National Science Foundation-funded research, examined the function and aerodynamics of Allomyrina dichotoma with the help of researchers in Drexel University's Mechanical Engineering Department and in collaboration with Konkuk University in South Korea. To get the two male beetles to lock in combat, a female beetle is used, or a small noisemaker duplicating the female's mating call.Įntomologist Séverin Tchibozo suggests the larvae contain much more protein (40%) than chicken (20%) and beef (approximately 18%), and they could become a protein source for a large human population. Since males naturally have the tendency to fight each other for the attention of females, they are the ones used for battle. Also in Asia, male beetles are used for gambling fights. Rhinoceros beetles have become popular pets in parts of Asia, due to being relatively clean, easy to maintain, and safe to handle. Small males often avoid larger males and exhibit alternative strategies to gain access to females. ![]() In this and other species that defend mating sites, larger males with larger horns mate more frequently, as they win more contests. Males use their horns to pry rival males off the area, which also may give them the chance to mate with a female. Male Japanese rhinoceros beetles ( Allomyrina dichotoma) fight to dominate sap sites. Contrary to what their size may imply, adult rhinoceros beetles do not eat large amounts, unlike their larvae, which eat a significant amount of rotting wood. First, the larvae hatch from eggs and later develop into pupae before they reach adult status (see picture at left). The larvae feed on rotten wood and the adults feed on nectar, plant sap, and fruit. These beetles' larval stages can be several years long. The females rarely live long after they mate. Rhinoceros beetles are relatively resilient a healthy adult male can live up to 2–3 years. The hissing squeaks are created by rubbing their abdomens against the ends of their wing covers. If rhinoceros beetles are disturbed, some can release very loud, hissing squeaks. When the sun is out, they hide under logs or in vegetation to camouflage themselves from the few predators big enough to want to eat them. Additionally, since they are nocturnal, they avoid many of their predators during the day. Their best protection from predators is their size and stature. A pair of thick wings lie atop another set of membranous wings underneath, allowing the rhinoceros beetle to fly, although not very efficiently, owing to its large size. The body of an adult rhinoceros beetle is covered by a thick exoskeleton. The size of the horn is a good indicator of nutrition and physical health. ![]() The horns are used in fighting other males during mating season, and for digging. Each has a horn on the head and another horn pointing forward from the center of the thorax. Common names of the Dynastinae refer to the characteristic horns borne only by the males of most species in the group. Some modern Oryctini grew up to 7 centimetres (2.8 in). An extinct Eocene Oryctoantiquus borealis was the largest fossil scarabeid, with a length of 5 centimetres (2.0 in). Some species have been anecdotally claimed to lift up to 850 times their own weight.
